My search for a great steak and cheese led me out of Winchester into nearby Charlestown WV. A friend suggested a new chain that came to the area called “Jersey Mike’s.” A quick check of their website and I found they talked a pretty good game so we decided to check it out.

The store design is nice and they have a great brand going but unfortunately that’s as far as the “goodness” goes. The poorly trained, distracted people working there were enough to make me want to walk out, but we soldiered through and completed our order. When I got down to the register, I couldn’t believe how filthy it was. It looked like it had been dragged through the mud. Whatever it was, the fact that the manager didn’t have sense enough to do something about it spoke volumes about the overall service. The store was not busy when we were there, yet every table was filthy. We had to bus and wipe down our own table.

When we finally got to the food, it was underwhelming. My wife ordered a club sandwich that was good but not particularly noteworthy. I ordered a Chipotle Steak and Cheese that was fairly well executed but the whole concept of the sandwich was ill-conceived. They seem to take pride in making their own bread, which was pretty good. But the steak and cheese was not in a sub roll, it was in a sliced roll. When they assembled the pile of meat and toppings it became a slippery, oozing mess that required a fork to eat because it all fell out. The sandwich as a product was a failure before the poor souls in the store ever tried to make it.

For a cold sub this place is a maybe, but for a hot sub I’ll pass, or should I say “Fugetta’bout it!”

This place is a gem. The best BBQ in the Winchester area and about as authentic as they come. Driving through White Post, you might miss the place because it looks more like an abandoned gas station than a restaurant. But don’t be fooled, these guys take their BBQ seriously and they have a gift. The pork ribs rock and chicken is excellent. Don’t miss out on the sides. Great collard greens and sweet potato fries. But the real must have if you visit is the sweet potato pie. It’s an unusual southern dish but man is it good. Stop in on the weekends and have a carryout delight.

In 2003, “East Side” was re-born as a seafood restaurant. In 2007 Jonathan took over the restaurant and started to build a reputation using his professional experience , passion, and work ethic. East Side serves crab legs & spiced shrimp, lobster, fresh raw oysters and clams. They also serve Black Angus steaks, chicken, pasta, soups and salads. Included as part of the establishment is a full bar that serves wine, beer and cocktails.

Reviews:

Winchester can be a pretty challenging place when you are looking for a seafood restaurant. the East Side Raw Bar & Grill is pretty much par for the course. The food is OK, it’s nothing special and the menu is not very diverse. It’s pretty much what you would expect from a road side seafood/bar. in fact, the place has a permanent odor of cigarette smoke. The interior is not much to look at and really doesn’t help the mediocre food. They seem more interested in the “bar” than the “grill”.

Have you eaten at this establishment? What do you think?

Restaurants in Winchester VA - LEDO has been making pizza since 1955. The first LEDO opened in Adelphi, Maryland. They featured rolled to order fresh handmade dough topped with the high quality cheese and the tomatoes. The concept was simple: to provide high quality food at a great value in a comfortable, family atmosphere.
Word of mouth quickly made LEDO a favorite spot for local residents, the University of Maryland community, and the Washington Senators. Bobby Allison, “TEX” Clevenger and other members of the New York Yankees and Washington Senators ate at Ledo Restaurant in the 1950’s.
The legacy lives on today. The families that created LEDO Pizza now pass the tradition to other families in new areas. These franchises uphold the high standards that made the LEDO Pizza famous. Very little has changed since 1955. The pizza is still made the same way. 419 Gateway Dr Winchester, VA 22603

Review:

Ledo’s offers a slightly different pizza experience than other pizza restaurants. The pizzas are square and served on plastic trays that remind me of a high school cafeteria. The service is friendly and attentive. Their pizzas have a sauce on them tends to polarize the crowd. Some people love it some people hate it. I think the difference is sugar in the tomato sauce. It’s kind of sweet and can be a little odd when you expect a more traditional sauce. All and all I like the place and have always had good experiences and meals there. It is particularly good for family meals.
