Daily Grind Coffee House
Sep 14th, 2008 | By admin | Category: Coffee Shop, Featured ArticlesIn the early 90’s, Ed Chapman and his family spent several years in Seattle, Washington. This was where and when he fell in love with the coffee industry. While there, he participated in seminars and training given by some of the west coast’s best coffee companies and gained a diverse knowledge of the coffee industry. While visiting the Chapmans in Seattle, Rick Rawlings and his family also got a taste of the specialty coffee experience. The journey began. After returning to Winchester, Virginia, Ed and Rick began planning the first coffee house in the area. While eating at a local food establishment, Rick & Ed ‘jokingly’ made an offer for the restaurant. The owner accepted and Daily Grind opened its doors a short three months later in November of 1995. This first location in Old Town Winchester was a hit and soon there was interest throughout the area for this type of relaxing atmosphere along with a great cup of coffee. After nearly five years of development into a multi-store chain, Ed and Rick decided to turn their operation into a franchise in order to give individuals who wanted to own and operate their own business a chance to become a part of Daily Grind. This was when our true expansion began. Daily Grind is now a fast-growing franchise operation.(excerpt from business website)
Review:
I have never been a fan of Starbucks. Their coffee tastes burnt their service is abysmal and they come off a liitle too cool. The Daily Grind is everything a Coffee shop should be. Locally owned with great coffee and other drinks. They also have a great selection of food and an atmosphere that allows you to have a casual meeting or enjoy some peace and quiet. And I really like the fact that there are no “Viente” anything. If you want a large coffee, order a large coffee. Thank you Daily Grind!
What say you? Have you had a great cup of coffee at the Daily Grind? Tell us about it.
Update: The Loudoun Street Daily Grind has been closed for a while and has now been gutted for remodeling. The store is scheduled to reopen soon under new management. We wish them the best, it’s a great coffee shop.

my family is really interested in Coffee Franchise like Starbucks. we are still saving money for the franchise cost.;~*
You’ll have to find some other franchise then. The Daily Grind as a corporate entity is defunct. It was taken and went out of business in less than a year.
Avoid this place. Really. It will ruin your morning (or whenever you go to coffeeshops).
I was in Winchester and needed a place to work, get a cup of coffee, and work on the computer before a meeting. I picked the Daily Grind because when I lived in Winchester back in the day (under the founders, not the current owners) it was a really nice little shop. Oh my, but that has changed.
Coffee- THEY RAN OUT OF COFFEE. I got a third of a cup, and was told that they would not be brewing any more normal coffee because they were out of beans. Huh? A coffee shop out of beans? I had to drink some bizarre flavored stuff because that’s all they had.
Food- I ordered a bagel with cream cheese. Shouldn’t be that complicated. First, the girl at the counter forgot I’d ordered the bagel, and I had to ask for it. Second, I ordered a cinnamon-raisin bagel… they brought me jalepeno. Not even close. Third, it was stale. Horrible. Not fit to eat, and with only a tiny little container of cream cheese… When I asked for my money back, she told me that they don’t do refunds.
The most amazing part? When I asked if all the bagels were stale, she argued with me and insisted that none of them were stale. Her reasoning? She had taken them out of the freezer that morning, so they couldn’t already be stale. Apparently the Daily Grind doesn’t understand that good bagels come out of the oven in the morning, not out of the freezer.
Oh yeah… they didn’t have an internet connection either.
